The Operation
On June 28, 2005, a four-man Navy SEAL reconnaissance team — Michael Murphy, Marcus Luttrell, Danny Dietz, and Matthew Axelson — was inserted into the mountains of Kunar Province, Afghanistan, to locate a Taliban commander.
Compromised by local goatherds, they were outnumbered by a Taliban force estimated at 30 to 200. Three of the four men were killed in the ensuing firefight. Marcus Luttrell survived, carried to safety by Afghan villagers who honored Pashtunwali — the ancient tribal code of hospitality and honor.
On the same day, a QRF helicopter carrying 16 SEALs and Army special operators was shot down, killing all aboard. It was the single deadliest day for Naval Special Warfare since World War II.
Operation Red Wings produced 19 posthumous and combat decorations, including the Medal of Honor awarded to Lt. Michael Murphy.
