Two weeks into Kandahar, a box showed up. No announcement. Just my name on a package in someone's handwriting. Inside: instant coffee I'd never heard of, a note from my sister that said nothing important and everything that mattered, and a photo of my dog on the back porch.

I kept the note in my kit for the rest of the deployment. The coffee was gone in four days. That's what this is for. Not strangers — people you know. People you want to reach. We just make sure it gets there, and gets there right.
