The mission starts before the sun does.
The 4am alarm is old news. You know the ritual: coffee, get moving, handle what the day brings. You don’t need a lecture on pour over technique. You need something that tastes good, gets the job done, and doesn’t require a morning chemistry set. Here’s what works.

Reveille — built for the morning
Colombia single-origin, blood orange and milk chocolate. Bold enough to cut through anything, smooth enough to drink straight. The morning bag.
Overnight cold brew prep
Set it up the night before. By 4am, it’s ready — no waiting, no process. Steep 12–16 hours in the fridge. Dilute 1:1 with water or milk.
The batch grind approach
Grind a week’s worth on Sunday night. Store in airtight containers. Every morning: scoop, pour, go. Use a medium grind for auto-drip, coarse for French Press.
Auto-drip is not the enemy
The machine does the work. You just have to dial it in: medium grind, 1:16 ratio, fresh beans. A decent auto-drip machine makes good coffee while you get dressed.
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| No time for a real brew in the morning | Make cold brew concentrate the night before. Or set the auto-drip machine timer the night before and wake up to fresh coffee. |
| Coffee tastes burnt from the auto-drip machine | Pour immediately after brewing. Don’t let it sit on the hot plate. Burn happens in 20 minutes on a hot plate — not during the brew. |
| Need more caffeine, not more coffee | Add a splash of water to espresso-style concentrate via AeroPress. Or switch to Reveille — medium-dark roast means the flavor carries through even with a shorter brew. |
Q: What roast is best for early mornings?
Medium-dark. Reveille is our morning roast for a reason — bold enough to be satisfying, not so dark that it’s one-dimensional. Sentinel works too if you prefer something slightly more complex.
Q: How do I make coffee the night before?
Cold brew: 85g coarse grind to 680g cold water, steep 12–16 hours in the fridge. French Press: set it up before bed, press and pour in the morning. Both are better than waiting for a machine to finish.
Q: Can I pre-grind coffee the night before?
Yes — but use an airtight container and use within 3 days. Ground coffee degrades faster than whole bean. If you’re grinding more than 3 days ahead, grind less frequently.
Q: What if I only have 2 minutes?
AeroPress. 17g fine-medium grind, 255g water, stir, press — done in 2 minutes. Better than auto-drip when you’re in a hurry. Keep pre-ground coffee in a sealed container for exactly this scenario.
